Laparotomy

Reversal of sterilization via laparotomy |
A laparotomy is an open abdominal operation. Under
general anaesthesia, a relatively small incision is made horizontally at the public line.
In the CRG, laparotomies are only performed in order to carry out reanastomosis (reversal of sterilization) and myomectomy (removal of myoma's and fibroids).
In the first case the laparotomy is necessary because the fibriods have become too big or too numerous, or both.
This method is necessary for a
reanastomosis, because the fallopian tubes are repaired via micro surgery.
A
sterilization is only performed via laparotomy if planned during a caesarian section. In all other cases, this is performed laparoscopically. In UZ Brussel, this operation is performed by the gynaecology department and not in the CRG.
