Postnatal Examinations: after the birth
All couples who have a child as a result of treatment in the CRG are urged to have their child examined by the Centre for Medical Genetics at the ages of two months and one year.
Why? Because some genetic defects are only apparent after birth. It is important for both your child and yourself (if you are planning to have more children) to know how these abnormalities come about, either through hereditary factors, or certain events during pregnancy etc. Furthermore, the UZ and the CRG wish to continually monitor the effects of IVF and associated techniques in order to ensure that current techniques continue to not cause an increase in risk of genetic abnormality, as current data suggests.
