In preperation for a potential pregnancy

Progesterone administration

After the embryo transfer, there follows a difficult period. You will have to wait for about two weeks in order to find out whether you are pregnant of not. If you are not pregnant, you will menstruate.
Progesterone adminstration
In the meantime, you must continue to use the vaginal pessaries containing progesterone. This hormone encourages the development of the endometrium and facilitates the implantation of the embryo.
All blood results are plotted on your treatment chart.
  • Administration of the progesterone is started one day before the pick-up or one day after; it may only be discontinued upon the authorization of the DM. If you are pregnant, this could vary from a few weeks, to three months.
  • It is important that you take enough progesterone. Respect the prescribed dose and make sure you don't miss a dose. The motto here is: better too much than too little.
  • The dose needed is two vaginal tablets (pessaries), three times a day (e.g. 8 am, 4 pm, 10 pm). The tablets arte to be inserted deep into the vagina.
  • To avoid infections, this is best done with freshly washed hands. There will unavoidably be some vaginal discharge as a result of the medication.

hCG-injection
Sometimes the progesterone treatment is replaced or supported during the first week after transfer, by the administration of hCG. This pregnancy hormone stimulates the production of progesterone in the body itself. In this case, either one injection of 5000 units will be injected, or, three separate injections of 1500 units will be given over three days.
The choice of which method to apply will be determined by the results of the hormonal blood tests.

Awaiting the result
Around the fifteenth day after the embryo transfer it can be determined whether you are pregnant or not.
  • A blood test is carried out on the 17th day after the egg cell pick-up for the purpose of verifying the progesterone levels in the blood and to measure the hCG level. See blood tests for practical information regarding the taking of blood. These tests can also show up a possible hyperstimulation.
  • The measurement of hCG is a pregnancy test. We can then inform you whether you are pregnant, based on the results of these two tests.
  • If during these two weeks your period starts, you must inform us and provide a blood sample on day three. Make sure you do not forget this test in your disappointment.

Rounding up the treatment
After every IVF treatment, you will be given an appointment with your doctor in the CRG. This appointment will be made on the day of your embryo transfer.  If the treatment has been a success, you will usually already know before this appointment. If you are pregnant, for a few days or weeks you will be monitored by the DM department via blood samples and ultrasound scans. But from a strictly medical point of view, your file at the CRG can be closed.
If the treatment was not successful, it may be hard to accept. Many couples blame themselves and ask themselves what they did wrong. The answer to that will probably be 'nothing'. Because -apart from meticulously following all instructions related to the treatment- there is nothing you can do to enhance your chances of success once the embryo transfer has taken place.
