What does treatment cost for Belgian patients?
Legal restriction
Belgian legislation regulates more than just the reimbursement conditions (see below). The new act of 2007 regarding medically assisted reproduction provides an absolute age limit for fertility treatments. An egg retrieval can only take place up till the day before you turn 45. For an embryo transfer, the age limit is 47. In other words, you have to have had your egg retrieval before your 45th birthday in order to qualify for an embryo transfer later (with thawed embryos). As soon as you turn 47, you can no longer be treated in Belgium.
For patients who fall under the Belgian NHS system the costs of fertility treatments are fully or partially (system of co-payment) refunded. For the conditions to be met for a reimbursement and for an overview of the expenses that remain (partly) to be payed by yourself, please click on the form below.

IVF and ICSI treatments take place for the large part without the need for hospitalization. It is neither necessary, nor possible for you to spend the night in hospital. Nevertheless, the forfeit 'Surgical Day Hospital' will be taken into account for certain procedures such as egg cell pick up. This is a form of hospitalization whereby you may leave the hospital on the same day as the procedure and is fully covered by your (Belgian) health insurance. For the embryo transfer this forfeit is not charged. |
If you do have to be admitted for hospitalization, a personal cost will be applied for every night that you spend in hospital. If in that case you specifically request a single room, the cost of your treatment will be higher. |
