Sterilization in women

The main activity in the CRG is concerned with the treatment of our patients' fertility problems. However, here we give information about an opposite treatment: the sterilization
.
Sterilization of woman takes place mainly in the gynaecology department, unless performed in conjunction with the removal of egg cells for donation.
It is in principle a non-reversible operation, intended for people who are absolutely sure that they do not want any more children. A reversal operation is available, but cannot guarantee the restoration of fertility. For further information, click here.
LaparoscopicPractical information regarding procedures under local or general anaesthetic. |
In the case of laparoscopic sterilization, an instrument is used to place plastic clips on the fallopian tubes in order to permanently close them. Another method is to cauterize the ends in order to close them.
The operation is done under general anaesthetic, on a day case basis. You may go home the same day, after a few hours rest in your room. You will need to take it easy for a few days following the operation.
Via laparotomy
Sterilization via laparotomy involves an incision in the abdomen, through which a piece of each fallopian tube is removed and the two open ends are tied off. This method is usually only performed during a caesarian section. You will be required to spent a couple of nights in hospital following the operation and to take it very easily for a week or so afterwards.
