Reversal of Sterilization, or Reanastomosis

Practical information regarding procedures under local or general anaesthetic.
People who have been sterilized in the past, but later decide that they want to have another child are not automatically referred for assisted conception or adoption. Following Reanastomosis (reversal of sterilization for both men and women) the chance is fair that pregnancy in the natural way will again be possible.
The operation involves the removal of the clips which were applied to the fallopian tubes during the sterilization operation, and the re-connection of the tubes. Depending on the damage to the tubes, the chances of a successful restoration of fertility are around 80% if the woman is younger than 36. there is a 1 in 10 chance of an ectopic pregnancy occurring though.

A reanastomosis is performed via laparotomy and under general anaesthetic and involves a few nights in hospital after the operation.
