Five frequently asked questions about assisted reproductive medicine

What does ART stand for?

'ART' is short for 'Assisted Reproductive Technologies'. It's the umbrella term for various fertility treatments at our centre: ovulation induction, artificial insemination, IVF, ICSI, IVM, and so on.

I already did several treatments at another fertility centre. Can Brussels IVF help us?

In Brussels IVF, an expert team supports you when a treatment did not work out as well as hoped and we look at possible adjustments or alternatives. In vitro fertilisation has been a standardised treatment offered in many fertility centres for many years. Unfortunately, routine treatment is not equally effective for everybody. For many years, Brussels IVF has been focusing on improving this 'routine' and adjusting treatments to make them more comfortable and efficient for our patients. We are also intensively involved in research into specific disorders. In this way, we have developed a unique expertise.

Am I more likely to have a twins or multiples pregnancy after medically assisted reproduction?

The risk of having a twin or triplets is very limited. Partly because we do all we can in our clinic to avoid this. Incidentally, the Belgian legislator has also regulated the number of embryos that can be transferred after IVF/ICSI treatment. Depending on the woman's age and the number of treatments she has already completed, more than one embryo may be transferred. In other words, the chance of having identical twins after transferring a single embryo is the same as with a natural pregnancy.

Are abnormalities more common in children after medically assisted reproduction

Children conceived through treatment at our centre have been monitored and examined by the Centre for Medical Genetics (CMG) since we started in 1983. Abnormalities are found in about 3% of these children. This percentage corresponds not only to that of other IVF centres, but also to the percentage of abnormalities in children conceived naturally. So there is nothing to suggest an increased risk.

Where to find accurate general information on fertility and childbearing?

You can find lots of information on fertility at www.allesovervruchtbaarheid.be. The website is an initiative of Reproductive Health Education.be. The organisation aims to support evidence-based initiatives on reproductive education. To achieve this, several educational institutions and university hospitals have joined forces.
